A small new study suggests, balding men had undergone hair transplants to look better or younger. Hair transplantation involves removing small pieces of hair-bearing scalp from a donor site and using them as grafts to be relocated to a bald or thinning area of the scalp.
People shown before-and-after pictures of hair transplant recipients rated men with more locks as looking more attractive and younger, researchers found. People also thought the men looked more successful and approachable after the procedure.
Hair transplant procedures vary by doctor. Generally, individual hairs are taken from the back of the head to fill out areas of the scalp with hair loss. Hair transplantation is a relatively safe surgery and is associated with very few complications. Hair transplant is a relatively new and continuously evolving art, which has seen several advances, paving the way for more natural results for patients.
The most common causes of hair loss are:
- A change in hormones
- A family history of baldness
As a rule, the earlier hair loss begins, the more severe the baldness will become.
Different types of hair transplantation
There are different types of hair transplantations and the methods for transplanting hair have evolved greatly over the past five years. The most common method is called the FUE Method, which is an advanced hair transplant technique performed without a scalpel or stitches. With FUE method, microsurgical instruments are used to relocate hair follicles one by one. The FUE method is minimally invasive and patient-friendly.
Some rules for modern and successful hair transplants:
- Keep it proportional. If this is impossible, then keep the hairline high.
- Maintain a temporal recession.
- Never draw a straight hairline. That will never look natural.
- Less angle between hair and scalp gives better results.
- Consider if the hairline will look good, even when a patient advances in age.
- Always remember the first rule of medicine – “Do No Harm.”
